Wellington’s fence and wall guidelines

  • The finished side of fences and walls must face the street or the adjacent property.
  • Fences, walls and hedges can’t sit closer than 5 feet back from the front plane of the house.
  • Where a fence is next to a sidewalk or public right-of-way, it must be set back at least 3 feet from the property line or roadway easement.
  • Along major thoroughfares, hedges are maintained between 6 and 8 feet high; elsewhere, hedges planted with a fence or wall match its height.

Repairs & permits

Repairs and permits in Wellington

The Village’s guidelines call for a building permit when fence or wall damage exceeds 20% of a section’s length, and repairs or replacement of more than 30% of the total length must comply with the Land Development Regulations. Under HB 803 (effective July 1, 2026) the Village lists fences under 3 feet that aren’t pool barriers, and fence repairs that don’t touch the posts, among small residential projects exempt from a building permit — pool barriers are not exempt. We check which rule applies before starting. See fence repair.
