Placement, finished side and clear-vision areas
- On your property, never in the public right-of-way. Fences can’t go in or enclose a drainage easement without written authorization from the city engineer.
- Utility easements are allowed, but the utility can remove the fence without having to replace it, and a gate is required if utility meters end up inside the fence.
- Finished side out toward the street or the neighbor, with posts and stringers facing in.
- Clear-vision triangles at street corners (20 feet) and driveways (10 feet) keep anything over 24 inches out, except chain link up to 48 inches with no slats or vegetation.
- Chain link on main corridors — on lots fronting Delaware Avenue, Orange Avenue, Avenue D and U.S. 1, or in downtown and redevelopment areas, chain link must be at least 25 feet from the right-of-way, painted or coated, and screened with shrubs and trees.
- Not allowed: electric fences, concertina wire, and barbed wire in residential neighborhoods.

Fort Pierce requires a permit for fences
Under section 125-322, every new or substantially altered fence or wall needs a construction permit from the building department, and the application has to show exactly where the fence sits on the property. We measure, draw the layout from your survey and file the permit for you.
- Planning Department pre-approval comes first on the city’s fence checklist
- The application lists owner and contractor details with a notarized contractor or owner-builder signature, and notes whether the fence will be a pool barrier
- A fence form or property survey showing where the fence and gates go
- Concrete block wall fences: plans signed and sealed by a Florida-licensed architect or engineer
- A recorded Notice of Commencement above the city’s value threshold, filed before the first inspection, plus the city’s debris form
- Pool barrier fences are submitted together with the pool permit; properties in a special flood hazard area get a flood review
