Parkland fence heights and design rules
Parkland’s Land Development Code (Article 15, Division 60) sets these limits:
| Rule | What the code says |
|---|---|
| Required yards | Fences and walls up to 6 feet |
| Next to nonresidential or A-1, BCA-1, AE-1, AE-2 lots | Up to 8 feet |
| Front yards in RS-1 to RS-4 districts | Up to 4 feet |
| Near intersections and driveways | In residential districts, no more than 2 feet tall within 10 feet of where street lines, or a driveway and a street line, meet |
| How height is measured | From finished grade or the centerline of the abutting street, whichever is higher |
| Opaque fences and walls | Must include at least one design feature — columns at least every 50 feet, changes in direction or materials, a landscaped break, or a 10-foot setback from a public right-of-way |
| Rights-of-way | No fence in a public right-of-way without a city right-of-way occupancy permit and agreement |
| Hedges | Up to 10 feet in required yards (12 feet in some cases) |

The Parkland fence permit checklist
- A Broward County Uniform Building Application
- A survey marking the fence location and type, the gates and the total length
- Chain link and wood: a standard detail; metal and PVC: engineering or a Notice of Acceptance (NOA)
- An HOA approval letter, a pool fence/screen addendum, a drainage district approval letter or a neighbor fence-connection agreement, where they apply
- A hold harmless letter for work in an easement, and a recorded Notice of Commencement above the job-value threshold
The city’s FAQ lists fences — and the removal of fences — among the work that needs a permit.

Pinetree Estates and the Ranches: drainage easements
In Pinetree Estates and the Ranches, a fence in the side 5-foot drainage easement needs a Utility/Drainage Easement Agreement and a city Engineering right-of-way permit before the building permit is approved. No fence, wall or landscaping is allowed in the rear 17.5-foot drainage easement, and nothing aboveground may sit within 6 feet of the pavement edge on a local street. We lay out the fence line around these limits before you sign.
